Did you Know?
That Deponthieu Street, just off of Market Hill in St. George’s, was once known as ‘Cockroach Alley.’ Reportedly, this short street, “early in the 20th century, was notorious as a red-light district. Cockroach being a euphemism for a prostitute” (Brizan and jessamy, 2004).
The name Deponthieu is after John Deponthieu who was a prominent proprietor on the island during slavery. He owned much of the area that surrounds York House.
